Each component is critically presented and new modern alternatives are proposed. We argue that a new modern paradigm should (1) reconceptualize the meaning of higher education [e.g., to emphasize master and doctoral studies rather than only (mainly) undergraduate studies]; (2) offer clear evidence-based strategies for development and organization (e.g., when and how to create new competitive academic programs/structures); (3) propose supportive financial mechanisms; and (4) clarify the academic and social status of university professors (e.g., tenure track system, financial status/salary level).
